Equipment is placed inside the barge. As much weight as possible is located insided the barge to reduce the weight topside. Lowering the center of gravity adds to the rig's stability.

The rig's generators were two huge Navy surplus submarine engines. They were 10-cylinder Fairbanks-Morse engines.
