Introduction
"Mr. Charlie," the first transportable submersible drilling rig, was built in 1952-53. In 1954, he went to work for Shell Oil, and continued to drill in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Morgan City for 32 years.In the following pages, you will see the "Mr. Charlie" in various phases of construction, as well as at work in the early days. You'll see a small number of the people who made it possible. You'll see what life was like on the early rig.
"Mr. Charlie" now has a new purpose: to teach. And like most things in life, we can't continue with our future without being aware of our past. Please enjoy our Photo History of the Mr. Charlie.
